Well, it's not really DIY but Jeremy's latest post (yes, the one with the disgusting faucet pictures), gave me an idea.
I completed my final artifact today for the CCM program and took my after treatment photographs. I thought I would post the before and after pictures I took. I'm actually happy with the way it turned out. The artifact is a map from 1867 on linen paper. It was very creased/wrinkled when I got it...as well as dirty. While I couldn't remove much of the dirt, I was able to humidify it in order to get rid of much of the creasing and wrinkles. The humidification also brightened the map. The reason I was unable to do any cleaning on it is the ink was water soluble. I did some localized solvent cleaning using ethanol just to lighten up some of the darkened areas and it helped a little. Treatment wise, there wasn't much I could do with the artifact so the important thing was to get it stabilized, flattened and encapsulated. And I did just that. The map is now encapsulated and in a frame.
And finally, here are the photographs. Enjoy!
The map before I started treatment on it. Check out all the
creases.
After I had finished treatment on the
artifact and before I encapsulated. There are
slight creases but not like before. And it's much lighter.
The completed map, encapsulated and in a frame.
And no, I don't know who John Smart is (look closely
at the map, top right corner).

Your colour thingy is upside-down in the last picture.... Details, Mary...
Yes, I noticed that after I posted the pictures. The important thing, however, is that my teacher did not notice when I showed her the picture earlier today ;)
